Claude vs ChatGPT in 2026: Price, Features and How Usage Limits Really Work

ChatGPT is the broader all-rounder; Claude gives you much larger working context. Here is how their prices, features and usage limits compare.

By Thaqif Rosdi, Founder and lead developer

Choosing between Claude and ChatGPT is no longer just a model-quality decision. The products now package models, research, coding, files, voice, images and agents in different ways, and the headline monthly fee tells only part of the story.

This comparison is for an individual paying personally, with prices converted to Malaysian ringgit. It uses official OpenAI, Anthropic and Bank Negara Malaysia information checked on 11 September 2026. MYR figures are estimates based on USD 1 = RM4.05 and exclude tax, card fees and exchange-rate movement.

TL;DR

  • Choose ChatGPT Plus if you want one broad everyday AI product for writing, research, voice, image generation, file analysis and occasional coding.
  • Choose Claude Pro if your work regularly involves very long documents, large codebases or sustained writing where a much larger context window matters.
  • Claude's chat and coding activity draw from one shared allowance. ChatGPT separates several advanced features into their own limits, so “unlimited messages” does not mean every tool is unlimited.
  • Neither consumer subscription includes API usage. API tokens are billed separately on both platforms.
  • At the main paid tier, both cost about RM81 per month before tax. The better buy depends more on how you work than on the subscription price.

The short verdict

For most people, ChatGPT Plus is the safer single subscription. It covers more modes in one interface: text, web research, voice, image creation, file analysis, custom assistants and coding tools. It feels like a general-purpose AI workspace.

Claude Pro is the stronger specialist choice when the work is mostly text, documents and code. Its current paid models can offer a one-million-token context window, and Claude's Projects workflow is designed to reuse background material efficiently. The trade-off is a more visible shared usage pool: a long Claude Code session can reduce how much Claude chat you have left in the same period.

If you only need lighter access, ChatGPT Go is the cheapest paid entry. If AI is already part of your working day, compare the RM81 plans first.

Claude Pro also offers annual billing at USD 200, approximately RM810 per year or RM68 per month when averaged across the year. ChatGPT Plus is monthly only. These are individual web prices; mobile-app billing and local taxes can differ.

The matching USD 20 headline makes Plus and Pro look equivalent, but the products allocate that spend differently. ChatGPT buys breadth. Claude buys a more text-and-code-centred workflow with substantially more context on current paid models.

Feature comparison

ChatGPT is the broader toolbox

ChatGPT combines general chat with web search, deep research, data analysis, file uploads, memory, voice, image understanding and native image generation. Depending on the plan, it also includes projects, tasks, custom GPTs and access to agentic coding through Work and Codex.

That breadth matters when a normal day jumps between drafting a proposal, analysing a spreadsheet, researching competitors, generating a concept image and talking through an idea on mobile. You can often stay inside one product.

Claude is focused on deep reading, writing and coding

Claude supports web search, file and image analysis, Projects, Artifacts, connectors and Claude Code. Artifacts are particularly useful when Claude produces something you want to inspect or iterate separately from the conversation, such as a document, interface, SVG or small interactive tool.

Claude can understand images and create visual outputs through code, including SVG, HTML and charts. It does not natively generate raster photos or illustrations in the way ChatGPT does. If visual ideation is a regular part of your workflow, that difference is meaningful.

Coding is packaged differently

Claude Code uses the same allowance as Claude chat on Pro and Max. A large repository, long session or heavy tool use can therefore consume a noticeable portion of the plan's shared capacity.

ChatGPT's Work and Codex features use an agentic allowance that is separate from routine text chat, although Work and Codex share that allowance with each other. The exact number of tasks varies with the model, task length and whether work runs locally or in the cloud.

How usage is actually consumed

Consumer plans do not work like a simple wallet containing a fixed number of tokens. Both companies translate model cost, context length, tools and compute into product-level allowances. A short question and a repository-wide coding task do not cost the same amount of capacity.

Claude: one shared pool

Claude usage is shared across the web app, desktop app, mobile app and Claude Code. Anthropic applies a five-hour rolling session limit and weekly limits. The real number of messages varies with the selected model, the length of the conversation, attached files, enabled tools and reasoning effort.

This makes Claude easy to understand at a high level but less predictable as a message count. Long conversations become progressively more expensive because the model must keep processing the accumulated context. Starting a fresh chat for a new task, keeping project instructions concise and storing reusable reference material in Projects can make the allowance last longer.

Paid users can enable extra usage credits. Once the included plan allowance is exhausted, eligible work can continue at API rates until the credit balance or a user-set spending cap is reached.

ChatGPT: broad text access, separate advanced meters

OpenAI describes ordinary paid-plan text messaging as unlimited, subject to abuse safeguards. The expensive parts of the product have their own limits: advanced reasoning models, deep research, file operations, voice and agentic coding can each use different reset windows.

For Codex, OpenAI publishes broad estimates rather than a guaranteed task count. On Plus, a five-hour window can range from roughly 10 to 100 local messages with Sol, 25 to 200 with Terra, or 250 to 2,000 with Luna. Task complexity can move actual consumption significantly.

Voice is another separate meter. Current limits include three hours in a rolling 24-hour window on Plus and 15 hours on Pro 5x, while Pro 20x lists unlimited voice. These product limits can change faster than the monthly prices, so check the counter shown inside the feature before planning a long session.

Context windows: how much can stay in one working session

A context window is the amount of material a model can consider at once: your current prompt, earlier messages, uploaded text and the model's response. It is not the same as a monthly usage allowance.

Claude's one-million-token window is its clearest structural advantage. It is useful for large codebases, long contracts, research libraries or multiple related documents that must be considered together. More context does not automatically produce a better answer, but it reduces the need to split or summarise source material as aggressively.

ChatGPT gives different context windows to fast everyday chat and deeper reasoning. Plus provides 54K in Instant mode and 256K in reasoning mode; Pro raises those to 128K and 400K. That is enough for many normal tasks, but it is materially smaller than Claude's current paid ceiling.

API pricing and token friendliness

Your Claude or ChatGPT subscription does not pay for API calls. If you use either model through your own application, automation or third-party API client, billing is separate and based mainly on input and output tokens. Cached input is cheaper when a provider can reuse previously processed context.

Approximate cost per one million tokens at USD 1 = RM4.05:

For developers, “token friendly” has two meanings.

First is price efficiency. At the mid-tier, GPT-5.6 Terra and Claude Sonnet 5 have the same input and cached-input price, while Claude's output is cheaper. At the high end, the compared Astra and Fable prices match. The precise winner depends on which model quality tier is appropriate for the job.

Second is workflow efficiency. Claude's larger context can reduce the operational work needed to split large inputs, but sending that full context repeatedly still costs tokens. ChatGPT's smaller consumer context does not directly predict API cost because API models have their own specifications and prices. In both ecosystems, prompt caching, shorter reusable instructions and selecting the least expensive model that reliably completes the task matter more than brand loyalty.

Which one should you choose?

Choose ChatGPT Plus if you want:

  • One subscription for text, research, voice, files and image generation.
  • A versatile assistant for mixed personal and business tasks.
  • Routine chat that does not draw from the same visible pool as coding agents.
  • The strongest all-round value at about RM81 per month.

Choose Claude Pro if you want:

  • A very large context window for long documents or codebases.
  • Strong writing, analysis and coding in a focused interface.
  • Projects and Artifacts as central parts of the workflow.
  • Annual billing that reduces the effective monthly price.

Choose a higher tier only when the lower tier is already interrupting paid work. A RM405 or RM810 plan can make sense for someone using AI for hours every day, but it is difficult to justify as insurance against a limit you rarely reach.

My recommendation

If I could keep only one individual plan for a mixed workload, I would choose ChatGPT Plus. It handles more kinds of work without requiring another specialist tool, and its separation between routine chat and agentic coding makes everyday consumption easier to live with.

I would choose Claude Pro instead for a writing-heavy or codebase-heavy month where the one-million-token context is genuinely useful. That is Claude's decisive advantage, not a small benchmark difference.

The practical answer is to start at the RM81 tier that matches your dominant workflow, use it for a month, and inspect where you actually hit friction. Upgrade because a limit costs you productive time, not because the largest plan looks reassuring.
